Tennessee Locusts

The golden richness of a warm summer day in the Tennessee Valley would be cold and unenjoyable without the gorgeous melody of locust voices casting their peaceful, warm and breezy blessings over the landscape like a familiar blanket of sound. The root of the name Tennessee is not clear. It could date back to Captain Juan Pardo, the Spanish explorer, when he and his men passed through a Native American village named "Tanasqui" in 1567. Another possibility is when In the early 1700s, British traders encountered a Cherokee town named Tanasi. The modern spelling of the name is attributed to James Glen, the governor of South Carolina, who used this spelling in his official correspondence during the 1750s.
