Downhill Skiing

Feel the whoosh of an ice crystal cloud is it spills past your face, freezing your nose and framing your big smile in a white mustache when you bravely fly down the mountain on two thin sticks. No other thrill can compare to sending yourself into the arms of gravity upon an icy incline while your squishy flesh-laden body bounces over the land simply hoping not to get knocked on the head or made to splat against a tree trunk. The first ski designed specifically for downhill alpine racing was known as a "Kiandra Kick-in". An improved version of the ski named a “Butter-Pat” was used in 1908 to contest the first documented International Downhill Carnival. The main technical challenges faced by skiers are simply how to control the direction and speed of their descent. The downhill skiers gain such control through making alternating left and right turns. Typically, novice skiers use a technique called the "snowplough/snowplow" to maintain comfortable speed and come to a stop by pointing one or both skis inward, but more advanced skiers use more difficult but more elegant and speedier methods.
