In this sound, you can hear the complex functions of storing, loading, unloading, and sorting railroad cars and locomotives. In the yard, many of the tracks are parallel so that railroad cars do not obstruct the flow of traffic. Special locomotives called switchers are used to move the various cars so they may be attended to and sorted before being sent on their way. Rail yards are busy and may be operated by control towers to ensure that the intricate network stays organized.
