Campfire 2

Crackle and pop go the flickering flames as they warm your head, heart, and twitching little toes. Leaving a fire unattended can be dangerous and it is important to fully extinguish the fire even if the flames have been put out, as embers left overnight will only lose a fraction of their heat. To properly cool a fire, water should be splashed on all the embers, including places that are not glowing red. If water is scarce, sand may be used. The sand will deprive the fire of oxygen quite well, but it is much less effective than water at absorbing heat. When winter camping with an inch or more of snow on the ground, neither of the above methods are necessary if you simply smother visible flames before leaving.
